The Tesla brand made quite a name for itself back in 2008 with the release of the Roadster. One of the more recent releases is the Tesla Model 3, which is known for its awesome features, isn’t exactly vacation-friendly due to its poor trunk capacity. So, how big (or small) is the Model 3’s trunk?
The 2022 Tesla Model 3 has a maximum cargo space of 22.9 cubic feet (roughly 649 liters). It contains two cargo compartments—a 3.1-cubic-foot (88-liter) front trunk and a 19.8-cubic-foot (561-liter) rear trunk behind the second row.
In this guide, I’ll cover the trunk specifications, as well as the internal and external measurements of this timeless electric vehicle. So, if you’re seriously considering picking up the new and improved version of the Tesla Model 3, I invite you to continue reading.
2022 Tesla Model 3 Trunk
If you visit the official Tesla website and scroll to the very bottom, you’ll quickly learn that the 2022 Tesla Model 3 is available in 3 versions—Performance, RWD, and Long-Range AWD. The different versions of this compact executive sedan vary greatly in terms of performance, but they are completely identical trunk-space-wise.
When you open the Model 3 Owner’s Manual available online, you find all of the specs and features, including cargo space, that you could hope to learn about this vehicle.
The following table will describe the 2022 Tesla Model 3’s trunk volume:
Parameters | Measurements |
Front Trunk | 3.1 cu. ft. (88 liters) |
Rear Trunk | 19.8 cu. ft. (561 liters) |
Total Cargo Volume w/ 5 Passengers | 22.9 cu. ft. (649 liters) |
Why Does the Tesla Model 3 Have 2 Trunks?
For those that have never owned an electric vehicle before, whether it’s made by Tesla or otherwise, you’re probably wondering why the cargo volume is split between 2 trunks.
Unlike traditional gas-guzzling vehicles, electric cars do not come with combustion engines. Instead, they are powered by rechargeable batteries. In the Model 3’s case, the battery is located below the floor pan. You would need to remove most of the vehicle’s interior to access the battery, but this is only necessary if you want to replace it.
In most cars, the engine is located underneath the hood. The lack of a combustion engine leaves the inside of the hood completely bare in the Tesla Model 3. Instead of filling it with car parts, the engineers at Tesla have decided to create a secondary storage compartment, which is considerably smaller than the rear trunk.
Trunk Size Comparison Between Tesla Models S, 3, X, and Y
The Tesla Models S, 3, X, and Y belong to completely different vehicle classes. As such, they vary significantly in terms of size and performance. Let’s see how the Model 3 compares to the Models S, X, and Y in terms of cargo space.
Parameters | Model S | Model 3 | Model X | Model Y |
Front Trunk | 3.1 cu. ft. (89 liters) | 3.1 cu. ft. (88 liters) | 6.5 cu. ft. (183 liters) | 4.1 cu. ft. (117 liters) |
Rear Trunk | 25.0 cu. ft. (709 liters) | 19.8 cu. ft. (561 liters) | 15 cu. ft. (425 liters) | 12.8 cu. ft. (363 liters) |
2nd Row Folded | 61.4 cu. ft. (1,739 liters) | N/A | 81.7 cu. ft. (2,314 liters) | 76.2 cu. ft. (2,158 liters) |
3rd Row Folded | N/A | N/A | 33 cu. ft. (935 liters) | 26.6 cu. ft. (753 liters) |
Maximum Passengers | 4 | 5 | 7 | 7 |
Total Cargo Volume w/ Max Passengers | 28.2 cu. ft. (798 liters) | 22.9 cu. ft. (649 liters) | 21.5 cu. ft. (608 liters) | 17 cu. ft. (480 liters) |
Note: The figures above are based on the respective versions with the highest seat capacities.
As you can see, the Tesla Model 3 has the second-largest trunk capacity when all seats are filled. However, the car with the greatest amount of storage space is the Model X, with 81.7 cubic feet (2,314 liters) behind the first row of seats (second and third rows folded down).
