The latest and greatest version of the Toyota RAV4 is an incredibly roomy SUV. The engineers have prioritized internal ergonomics over everything else, making it a smooth ride for families on the go. If you’re wondering how much trunk and cargo space this compact crossover has in store, I’ll tell you.
The 2023 Toyota RAV4 boasts a trunk measuring 40 inches long, between 39.4 and 59 inches wide, and between 34.5 and 36.6 inches high. Behind the rear seat, you get 37.5 cubic feet of storage space. Fold the rear seats down to increase cargo volume to 69.8 cubic feet.
It’s pretty clear that the RAV4 prioritizes cargo space, but what about the differences between grade and trim options, internal and external dimensions, and other specs? I’ll address all of these points in the following sections.
2023 Toyota RAV4 Grade Options

How Much Can a 2023 Toyota RAV4 Carry?
As you can see from the specs tables above, the 2023 Toyota RAV4 is, by no means, a workhorse vehicle. However, this crossover SUV still retains a meaningful amount of cargo space, which is what preceding RAV4s were known for.
To put the RAV4’s trunk capacity into perspective, you should know that the average compact SUV has a maximum cargo volume of around 65 cubic feet. So, the RAV4 theoretically holds 4.9 cubic feet or 7.5% more cargo than comparable car models.
Although the figures listed above describe the Toyota RAV4’s cargo capacity to be between 37.6 and 69.8 cubic feet, the actual figures are closer to 20.5 cubic feet and 60 cubic feet (behind the rear and behind front rows, respectively). That said, the Toyota RAV4 still possesses a respectable cargo space, which should hold more than just a few suitcases and other necessary vacationing supplies.
In addition, the miscellaneous specs table above shows that the 2023 Toyota RAV4 has a maximum payload of between 1,025 and 1,230 pounds (payload includes the weight of the passengers). Assuming you plan on stuffing all five seats with the typical 5-foot-9, 125-pound person, that leaves you with roughly between 400 and 605 pounds of vacant payload capacity for all of your belongings.
And let’s not forget about the towing capacity of this crossover SUV. Depending on the grade and trim, a Toyota RAV can lug around trailers weighing between 1,500 and 3,500 pounds. In case you’re curious, the Adventure and TRD Off-Road grades and trims can tow the most weight.
2023 Toyota Storage Features
If the massive cargo volume and a towing capacity of the Toyota RAV4 aren’t enough to convince you of its vacation-friendliness, then perhaps you’d be interested in learning about the extra storage features this crossover SUV provides.
Inside the newest version of the RAV4, you’ll find:
- In-dash storage trays
- Storage pockets
- Large cupholders
- Seat nets
- Trunk net
Of course, the volume capacities of the features listed above are included in the RAV4’s overall trunk and cargo space dimensions. It’s also worth noting that the capacities of these specialty storage compartments will slightly limit how many large-sized items (suitcases, paddleboards, etc.) you can stuff into the car.
And if you’re unable to locate a motel, hotel, or inn during your trip, you can fold down the rear seats to create a spacious bedroom for up to 2 people. It’ll be a bit cramped, but it should make do if you’re in a pinch.
